Hog Hoggidy Hog
The name Hog Hoggidy Hog has been etched deep into the mosh-wounds of the South African scene. It’s been over a decade of action-packed, music, mishchief and mayhem since the young hoglets first blessed the decaying stage of the Purple Turtle with their debut performance. Now all these years down the line, not much has changed. They may be somewhat more professional, a bit more well known and sound a lot tighter but it’s sometimes still a struggle to keep singer, George Bacon’s clothes on.

Lowprofile
Lowprofile is a melodic punk rock band from Durban, formed in 2003. No gimmicks, no eyeliner, just heartfelt and honest, full-blast melodic punk rock with a side helping of ska. Inspired by the mid ‘90s punk revival, Lowprofile bang it out hard and fast, with a modern technical twist, catchy harmonies, and an unshakeable love for metal. Remember all those bands you used to love? We do.

Yossi's Cafe

Yossi’s is a vibey day night café started by Dave & Darryl Hofmann in an old house situated in the heart of Glenwood. It has been given great attention from national magazines due to its uniqueness and for the renaissance it has created in the area. It is currently rated in the Top 30 restaurants in KZN. Yossi’s started as a small day time café but soon grew into a late night venue due to its vibe, interesting and well priced food. A great following of regular patrons from as far as Ballito to Hillcrest are attracted to Yossi’s eclectic mix of furniture and couches on the inside (non-smoking) and outside (smoking). This medium size 75 seater restaurant spills over onto the pavement on most nights with couches and old dining suites aplenty.

The food is a mixture of Moroccan, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes with big emphasis on social eating. The starters are a wide variety of mezze items from pate’s, tapenades to stuffed falafel with feta and herbed lamb meatballs stuffed with olives. These items range from R10-R18 per dish or a platter for R38. Mains include dishes from lamb tagines to vegetable fritter stacks and stuffed chicken breasts. You can chill on a couch of any size from 2 to a 16 seater and enjoy a hookah pipe with Turkish coffee and Uzo or our house special Turkish Tiger shooter which is a condensed milk based nightcap. A big selection of styled cocktails and smoothies are great for those wishing for a casual drink.

Taco Zulu

Taco Zulu is a Mexican restaurant based in Morningside, Durban that opened its doors in May 2006.

The menu has a wide selection of Mexican delights from your classic Taco Rite through to our famous Chimichangas, a large tortilla filled with melted cheese, mushrooms, onions and topped with salsa, guacamole and sour cream, and the ever popular enchiladas. All their ingredients are freshly prepared everyday and served with a touch of love and well being. Another of their draw cards are the Amazing Cocktails.

Their target market is hard to define as they are focused on making everyone feel special at Taco Zulu. Be that as it may they have a great pull towards the young, colourful, musical, sporty and relaxed people around.

Spiga d'Oro

A unique restaurant in Florida Road that is strongly reminiscent of the typical Italian pavement bistros. The restaurant is always lively and there is a buzz as people sit at tables on the pavement or dine inside. Bookings are not taken and part of the experience is joining the crowd waiting for tables and watching the passing parade.

The fare is ostensibly pizzeria, but in fact it has all the familiar Italian food and in addition there is the "On The Table" menu which provides a great selection of more innovative cooking. Pizza is served in the real Italian style, thin crispy crust brushed with a home-made napoletana sauce and topped with delicious mozzarella.

The décor is classy but understated, with the emphasis on comfort and functionality. The atmosphere is provided by the lively press of people and the European feel of the pavement seating. Prices are very reasonable and the restaurant is open till the early hours of the morning. Where else can you have a fine meal at 2 am?

Society

Society is a statement rather than an aspiration and, in this case, the perfect "high" could confidently be added. Shortly after the restaurant opened, the urban grapevine kicked in as everyone was beguiled by the heavy combination of fabulous food and gorgeous surroundings. The old house has been thought provoking transformed into a stylish South Pacific paradise and it was hardly surprising to learn that hands-on owner Athos Euripidou contracted a London-based interior designer to tackle the project.

The menu too is eclectic and, sushi bar aside, Oriental nuances extend to most dishes.

Pizzetta

Pizzetta is the brainchild of Marcelle Labuschagne & Sean Roberts, who made a name for themselves on the restaurant scene with their first restaurant café 1999 which was voted top 10 in S.A in 2006 by diners club and wine magazine.

They opened Pizzetta in mid 2006 with front man Tyrell Francis who runs the show. It has been has been a success story from the word go, simplicity is what it is all about at Pizzetta. The menu is comprises of 13 pizzas, 6 salads, 2 dessert pizzas with specials changing daily, specials include Italian style mezze platters, pizza, salad and dessert specials.

All pizzas are available in two sizes “Bambino and Grande” Bambinos are particularly small and are priced accordingly. The idea is that you can celebrate different tastes by ordering more than one bambino, and don’t forget to throw a salad in the middle of the table for all to share from. The grande pizza is your standard pizza size, and is available for those who think that the pizzas are just too darn good to share.

Favourites on the menu include the Chicken, jalapeño, feta and avocado or Gorgonzola, onion marmalade and wild rocket pizza. For dessert clients can try their unique Desserts Pizza like the Nutello, marshmallow, nuts and mascarpone or gelato pizza.

If the thought of pizza doesn’t grab you why not grab a magazine from the lounge soak up the vibe of the increasingly popular “Davenport District” sipping on an Illy espresso or an exotic cocktail.

Mo Noodles

Discover Durban's best kept secret, which, up until now, has tended to be spread by word of mouth only. Some locals have been eating there every week for the last 5 years and still love it! Mo Noodles was one of the city’s first fusion restaurants and the food varies from fusion to Eastern (Japanese/Thai). The menu caters for the Western palate with a joining of Thai and Australian influences, but the spotlight falls firmly on noodles. A perennial favourite is the chicken breast rolled in sesame seeds with chilli and peanuts, served on coconut noodles.

One of the most appealing elements in Mo's menu is the focus on health; vegetables, fish and chicken dishes are all cooked in the low-fat Eastern style. Mo's is well-known in salad circles for its inspired versions and combinations, such as sesame prawn and fruit salad in season, and the lentil and feta salad with a mint and lemon dressing.

The minimalist décor also exhibits the Eastern influence, without the often garish aspects. This allows the food and the patrons to take centre stage. The restaurant bustles and the service is efficient and friendly, indeed the majority of patrons seem to be loyal customers who are on first name terms with all the staff.

Mo's changed hands during 2003 but has remained faithful to the original formula. The chefs have been with Mo’s for years and this ensures that the quality and consistency have remained excellent. Quality is never compromised, for example only calamari imported from the Falklands is used. A hint for a cosy night in: Mo’s does take-aways.

Joops Place

Situated a little off the beaten track in Durban's trendy Morningside, this bistro style steak restaurant is a well known haven for those who love steak, but hate steakhouses.

Established in 1993 by ex Capetonians Joop and Wendy Mol, the ambience is warm and welcoming. The music is strictly background to encourage conversation, while most of the noise comes from the open plan kitchen where Joop cooks all the meat, creating huge flames as he prepares his special dishes such as Joop's Special, a centre cut of super grade fillet, stuffed with pineapple and cheddar cheese, cooked to crisp perfection, finished with button mushrooms and flambéed with brandy.

A former butcher, Joop selects, matures, cuts and prepares all the steaks while Wendy supervises the front of house, ensuring efficient, personal service.

In addition to the "steaks with a difference", Joop's Chicken Cacciatora, succulent chicken breasts sautéed with bacon, onion and tomato, simmered with Sage and Rosemarie, is well worth a try, as is Chicken Schnitzel, plain or topped with a zesty cheese and mushroom sauce. Oxtail Casserole in a rich brown gravy, Lamb Curry, Chicken and Prawn Curry and Veal Schnitzel are some of the other options available.

Smokers are welcome on the enclosed terrace and there is ample, safe parking. No B.Y.O. allowed as the wine list caters to most tastes and budgets.

Open Monday to Saturday for Dinner, Lunch and Dinner on Friday, closed on Sunday.
To accommodate corporate celebrations, the restaurant opens for lunches during the month of December.

Booking advisable.

The restaurant is situated at the Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World on Durban’s Golden Mile overlooking the sea with magnificent views from the Bluff to Umhlanga Rocks. Havana Grill has a modern, minimal interior finished with comfortable upholstered chairs (including some leather booths) and large tables, this space is designed for comfort.

The beef and lamb at Havana Grill are cut and stored in separate preparation areas. We use only SA Grainfed Super Beef, which is hung on the rail for up to 8 days, cut and then vacuum packed for 21 days to age. T-bone steaks are dry aged. Larger than standard menu cuts are available on request. A particular speciality is the “Capo” (lid of the Rump) which is salted and rubbed with olive oil, grilled whole, then sliced and served with Chimichurri, an Argentine coriander salsa. We also specialise in fresh line fish, prawns, langoustines and crayfish when available.

Havana Grill & Wine Bar is about wine, vibe and cigars. We have an extensive wine list specialising in some of South Africa’s best known wines. All our cigars are imported from Cuba. The Phantom Ship - A legend, no beginning, no end...

Since the dawn of history the oceans have thrown the gauntlet to the brave, the foolhardy, the wicked and the wise, inviting those who dare to take the chances in a perilous dance of life and death.

But nowhere has this challenge been more tempting and taunting than here on the vital eastern trade routes of KwaZulu-Natal where jagged rocks, dangerous currents, treacherous seas and violent storms have lured hundreds of vessels to their watery graves.

It’s not surprising then that ghost stories abound along this stretch of coastline. Even here at this site of this stranded ship, legend has it that on certain night of the year you can hear muffled voices of people, men and women, and the sound of their weary feet as they trudge through the sand. Some are crying, some are praying and chanting. Yet in the daylight there are no signs of anyone, no footprints, nothing.

Even stranger is the legend of the Phantom ship first sighted at the turn of the last century sailing into Durban harbour from a southerly direction. Ship’s stevedores noticed it at dusk rounding Durban’s Bluff headland with just one blue-green light swinging at the fore. They waited for the vessel - described as a stem ship with a black and scarlet funnel and two masts - to enter the harbour, but it never did.

Several weeks later it appeared again in the same area, but this time even closer to shore, moving slowly like a stealthy shadow again. It appeared to have no name, answered no signals and flew no flags.

Of course sea folk being notoriously superstitious, all kinds of notions were proffered. It was a pirate ship skulking in the dark waiting for its prey, said some. It was lost said others. Some suggested it was on some secret mission. But with no real answers it wasn’t long before the mystery ship was known simply as that darned phantom.

And there the legend may have remained, part myth, part reality, if it had not been for man’s insatiable curiosity which resulted in it being wrecked upon our shores.

Blue Zoo

The Blue Zoo Garden Restaurant is in one of the most picturesque settings in Durban. This is one way of describing The Blue Zoo, which nestles among the splendour and serene atmosphere of Mitchell Park in Morningside.

The Tea Gardens at Mitchell Park has been something of an institution over the decades, but it was only in the 1990’s that The Blue Zoo was born. The restaurant operates throughout the day and at night.

It is a perfect setting for weddings and functions, and an ideal venue for corporate breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Once a month it hosts its Wine Club.

Bean Bag Bohemia

Bean Bag Bohemia was opened in 1995 by Guy Wood and Charles Kerr after many years and numerous journeys around the world, enjoying places and environments that did not exist in Durban. The idea being to create an exceptional place that people could go to, that would be more than a restaurant and a meal out, but a place that would become a lifestyle and an evening of entertainment, enlightenment and enjoyment, meeting people and discovering new things. It was to be a place where people of different cultures and views could meet and melt, to evolve a new living restaurant lifestyle also providing a space in the post club culture, as opposed to a functional venue only. BBB has made its mark in establishing a culture in Durban very different to any other place in town.

The Café Bar and Restaurant has strong ties with the arts, performance and creative sector in Durban and as a result has a strong cosmopolitan and varied clientèle - in particular it has been the home to the renowned Fantastic Flying Fish Dance company and Mark Hawkins, who have been fed and trained in the famous Bean Bag Bohemia art of drinking countless shooters and gave birth to the well known BBB sharing, drinking and toasting slogan of “Eyes”, which any well versed Bean Bagger will know. BBB is situated in Morningside in one of Greyville’s Buildings that has been declared a National Monument firstly, and now with the advent of Bean Bag Bohemia Café Bar and Restaurant an Institution as well.

An added advantage to BBB and it’s popularity is that the club like late night atmosphere is provided on a nightly basis with the BBB policy of - No cover charge. Also available, are cocktail parties in their garden or a range of snack menus for those companies that are catering in their offices this year. BBB is well known for it’s specialized and specifically designed outside functions, at your home, or the office or just about any extraordinary venue that you can dream of. BBB has also become well known for the outlandish cocktails it serves in the café bar, which are a feature at the “Salon Wednesday” cocktail night which are curse to many on a Thursday morning at work (if you make it to work).

9th Avenue Bistro

9th Avenue is a modern, elegant, clean-lined bistro run by husband-wife team Carly and Frances Goncalves. The minimalist décor and soft lighting creates a warm, relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The restaurant seats 65 people, which includes a smoking area on the small enclosed terrace.

The cafe-style cuisine is fresh, uncomplicated and very creatively presented. Chef/owner, Carly, continues to produce outstanding and interesting menus, while maintaining some of the signature favourites. Try the pepper-seared tuna sashimi, on Japanese radish and cucumber salad with wasabi, soy and pickled ginger; or the home-made butternut squash raviolis with Madeira cream demi, wild mushrooms, sage, candied pecans and shaved parmigiana. For mains, the popular crispy roasted free-range duck is served on a gingered sweet potato and butternut mash, with grilled asparagus and cinnamon-orange demi. His cooking reflects a strong base of classical techniques, with an interesting, modern twist. The menu changes often, making the most of the freshest, seasonal ingredients.

The extensive, reasonably priced wine list includes many of the smaller boutique wineries of the Cape. Service is refined, professional and knowledgeable.

Street Names

These new street names sure are confusing. OK, so they're not that new, but they're definitely really hard to memorise and I still have no idea where I'm going any more. As I don't seem to be the only one experiencing this problem I've added a pdf with the entire list on it, which you can download here

Hopefully, one day we'll know exactly which road is which, but by then they'll probably change them again.

Moyo

Moyo is the Swahili word for soul and a dining experience at Moyo is an African soulful experience. A fantastic venue for an African Christmas, African New Year's party... or just a date in Africa.

The African sun rising from the east wakes Durban first as it begins to warm across South Africa, leaving Durban famous for sunrises and Cape Town as a sunset favourite. As an exception, one hundred and fifty metres into the Indian Ocean, Moyo uShaka allows you to cast your eye back over Durban city and watch as as the sun sinks splashing all shades of pink as it descends. Moyo UShaka, named after the great Shaka Zulu warrior, hunts every African flavour that has been nurtured under this African sun, caressed by the Sahara breezes and washes them with the tides that splash below the pier that the restaurant is built on onto your plate. Moyo UShaka's beach bar tugs your African rhythm from within with the current of background African drums. This multi-leveled restaurant is a multi-cultured African experience seasoned by a sea-salted air.

Reform Club

The Reform Club is a delightfully plush cocktail lounge that we reckon most would fall in love with on first sight. Put simply, if words such as lavish, intimate & exclusive describe you, then we've found your venue.

"Its more lounge and cocktail bar than club, and wooden floors are dominated by alcoves of red emblazoned angular couches and upholstered ottomans that are as useful for sitting on as they are for supporting an array of decadent cocktails.

It’s all about contrasting shape and texture, as chocolate brown walls are interspersed with panels of corduroy, and glamorous black and white pictures are immortalized in gilded frames."

Some of the Highlights at uShaka Marine World include:

Get ready to meet some of the most feared creatures of the deep? Sharks, sea snakes, devil fire fish and stone fish occupy this area where from the surface you might even be able to touch a shark as it swims past a purpose-built balcony at feeding time.

Coral Gardens:

The Deep Zone:
The deep zone is a window into the lives of some of the weirdest and most spectacular animals inhabiting a world hundreds of metres below the surface of the ocean, often in total darkness.

Penguins:
The African Penguin is an endangered species. However, our breeding colony will provide you with a special opportunity to see these rare birds as they 'fly' through the water and waddle on land.

Zimbali Golf Course

Zimbali Golf Course, Port Zimbali, Ballito, Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu Natal / Zimbali is well known for its stunning 18-hole golf course. It offers a challenging round of golf of world-class standards and stunning views. The Zimbali Golf Coastal Resort Course varies. Starting off with a coastal links feel, the course takes a dramatic turn through rough rolling wetlands and ends up in the Zimbali Coastal forest. The course is also a tough walk but fortunately golf carts are compulsory!

Most of the tees are high on the side of hills or sand dunes. The fairways cut through the valley and the greens, seemingly always at the bottom of the next hill. This makes judging distance a time consuming task, especially for first those playing this golf course for the first timetimers to the course!

Tom Wieskopf, the designer of this Northern KwaZulu-Natal masterpiece and past winner of the British and SA Open championship, stays true to his philosophy of providing a fair challenge to golfers of any level.

Umhlali Golf Course, Umhlali, North Coast, KwaZulu Natal / Neighbouring on Ballito Bay, only 15 minutes North of Umhlanga Rocks, Umhlali, just 20 minutes drive north of Durban is a scenic undulating course in a tropical garden setting. Although not a very long course, the holes at Umhlali Golf Course are cleverly designed and varied, providing a fair golfing test. Indigenous vegetation is predominant at some of the holes, with others featuring mainly palm trees and water hazards.

Umhlali Golf Course sports sweeping fairways, exotic palm trees and seven magnificent water holes. Hosting thousands of visitors annually, Umhlali Golf Course offers the kind of hospitality one would expect on the Dolphin Coast. Strategically positioned T-Boxes are designed to test the skills of the more competitive golfer, as well as catering for the longer handicappers, playing off the front markers.

Royal Durban Golf Course

Royal Durban Golf Course, 16 Mitchell Crescent, Durban, KwaZulu Natal / Flat but interesting championship course within the confines of the Greyville horse racing track, and close to the city centre. Several holes border on the racetrack on the opening nine, so don't come to Royal with a slice.

The Course
This course is one of the most demanding golf courses in the country. At first glance it looks easy with its flat layout and lack of trees, but there is little protection from wind and that can mean a difficult game.

Signature Hole
There's a good balance of holes, short and long, and one of the most exciting par 4s is the ninth, just 279 metres from the back, with a green placed between a large tree and perilously close to the rails of the racetrack.
